Goodbye From The Brooks

Lynn, John Wesley, and I thank you so much for the generous love gift you gave us and for the beautiful last Sunday that we shared together, complete with potluck lunch and a whole lot of hugs. We will be remembering you as we move and settle in Jackson, giving thanks for the bonds of friendship formed and enjoyed over the last couple of years.

As I’m writing this short piece, I’m excited about going to hear Natasha Trethewey, former poet laureate and Pulitzer Prize-winner, at the MAX later this week. In her newly published memoir, The House of Being, Trethewey mentions how when she was a child her mother would provide a counterweight to racist symbols and slogans along the Mississippi Gulf Coast by singing songs such as the “Battle Hymn of the Republic” and “Lift Every Voice and Sing.” Trethewey points out that her mother’s words and melodies served to counter much of the psychic violence she would have otherwise endured as a child. By doing this, her mother was challenging the dominant narrative of their homeland of that time, while also transcending it by imagining a world in which justice is possible.

I believe that we, the church, are personally called by God to just such activity, in a world whose dominant priorities bear little resemblance to the “good news” we’ve been given to live and to share. When we faithfully lean into the prophetic words and songs of scripture, proclaiming how God will make all things right and new - while also not forgetting the “Stockdale Paradox” (remember it?) - we are tracking well.

This is our calling, our joy, our life - until that time when no counterweight is needed or required.

May the Lord bless you and keep you . . .” (Numbers 6: 24-26) . . . and see you further down the road,

Rick
