Pastor’s Pen

We “fall back” on November 6 when Daylight Saving Time ends and we set our clocks back an hour, providing an extra hour of sleep - or an extra hour of something - in the process.

November 6 is noteworthy for another reason in 2022: It’s the Sunday we observe All Saints Sunday, a service that remembers the saints who have gone before us.  During this service, we will read the names of church members who have died in the last year.

“Saints”, in this case, refers to the New Testament meaning of all Christian people of every time and place.  How reassuring it is to know we, sinners of God’s own redeeming (Romans 8:1), are in eternal relationship and “communion” with all who have died in the Lord.  As we approach our country’s observance of Thanksgiving later the same month, is this gift not one of the main things for which to give thanks?

As we enter another season of thanksgiving, I give thanks for the ways you offer witness day by day to the grace of Jesus Christ. May God find us ever faithful in all that we are and do.
