Pastor’s NOTE

Dear Central Family,

In her extraordinary book, Searching for Sunday, the late great Rachel Held Evans proclaimed, “The great struggle of the Christian life is to take God’s name for us, to believe we are beloved, and to believe that is enough.”

Early in this new year of 2023 (January 8), we are invited to “remember our baptism” in our services of worship, just as we are encouraged every day to individually “remember” it. Baptism is the doorway, the rite of initiation into the Christian faith, and into the church. It is professed and lived out before others.

Baptism is a big deal, the full meaning of which we will never fully comprehend in this life, any more than we comprehend the full scope of salvation.

Baptism into Jesus Christ proclaims, “you are accepted,” “you are received,” “you are forgiven,” “you are seen by God . . . and God claims you!”

Baptism includes us - incorporates us - into the body of Christ. This comes about only as the result of a love that is determined to draw us in. Long after the act of baptism, that love holds us together without ranking any one of us more or less important than any other member of His body.

As we begin a new year together at Central United Methodist Church, may we focus ever more intently and gratefully on both the gift and calling of our baptism!

Looking forward to sharing 2023 with you,

Rick
